Commonly at MEDcare Urgent Care we see all types of bites, from pesky mosquitos to spiders and ticks. Sometimes it is hard to figure out the culprit of the bite. Most do not require medical attention, however, here are a few signs to look out for.
Signs of Infection
Signs of infection include redness, warmth, swelling, red streaking around the bite, fever, chills, drainage from the bite and/or pain. These signs may indicate the need for an antibiotic.
The “Bulls Eye”
The “bulls-eye” rash is a distinct pattern that appears on the skin after a person that has been bitten by a tick. This may indicate the contraction of Lyme Disease. The CDC recommends immediate medical attention. Not all Lyme disease presents with a rash. If you develop flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, headache, body-aches) within 30 days of a tick bite get checked out at the closest urgent care center.
Scabies or Bed Bugs
Scabies is caused by a mite that burrows into the skin. Common places to notice this rash is on the sides and webs of the fingers, wrists, armpits, and genitals. Intense itching occurs in the area where the mite burrows.
Bed Bugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of animals or humans. They feed by piercing the skin and withdrawing blood through an elongated beak. Please let your healthcare provider know if you think you have bedbugs or Scabies and seek further instruction.
While most bug bites are harmless, it is important to recognize the signs of something more serious. You can visit any of our urgent care centers to help evaluate any bites, stings, and skin infections.
