Due to the discomfort of bug bites and stings, bugs aren’t exactly everyone’s favorite thing about the outdoors. In most cases, there’s a little bit of itching or a mild uncomfortable rash, but sometimes those bites and stings are more serious. There are questions though about how to treat the reactions at home, or if it may require the care of an urgent care or emergency room provider.
MedlinePlus, an affiliate of the National Institutes of Health, offers advice.
- For stings it’s better to scrape the sting out by using something like a credit card, instead of tweezers that can squeeze more venom into the skin.
- Antihistamines can help with swelling and itching, as can alternating with ice packs over the affected area.
- Remove restrictive clothing, and jewelry near the area so as not to inhibit swelling and cause further damage.
- Do not use stimulants, aspirin, or pain medicines without consulting a care provider.
- If a person shows signs or a history of anaphylaxis, has trouble breathing, swelling near their mouth or throat, weakness, or starts to turn blue, call 911 or take them to your local emergency room.
