Flu shot season is in full swing, and for good reason! To Own Your Health, it makes sense to be in-the-know about what our current flu shots are designed to fight. The CDC works to understand the flu trends every year and then determines which strains of the flu are most likely to circulate. Vaccines are then assembled to match those strains. Per the CDC:
- There are three main types of flu shots: inactivated influenza vaccine [IIV], recombinant influenza vaccine [RIV], and live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV). The CDC has no recommended preference between the three types.
- The standard dose trivalent flu shots for the 2020-2021 flu season are protective against Flu A(H1N1), Flu A(H3N2), and one lineage of the Flu B virus. The quadrivalent flu shots protect against Flu A(H1N1), Flu A(H3N2), and two lineages of Flu B viruses.
- Thimerosal, which is made with mercury, is only present in flu shots that are drawn from multidose vials. Our centers only use single-dose/pre-filled syringes, which avoids the concerns associated with Thimerosal.
